The separation of Tyrol from the old diocese of Brixen after the First World War triggered the emergence of the diocese of Innsbruck. This stood in connection with the sweeping new regulations of ecclesiastic alliances in the region of the former imperial provinces of Tyrol and Vorarlberg throughout the resulting decades. On July 7, 1964 an agreement between the Holy See and the Austrian Republic announced the elevation of the Innsbruck/Feldkirch apostolic authority to a diocese, to whose expansion the Austrian Republic promised to provide a total of 10 million Schillings. Through the papal charter "Sedis Apostolicae" of August 6, 1964, the former apostolic authority of Innsbruck/Feldkirch was elevated without a change in boundary to Diocese Innsbruck. Innsbruck became a seat of the bishop, with the parish church of St. Jacob located there designated as its cathedral.
